The Towpath Trilogy Race Series is a three-event fundraising race series held by the nonprofit Canalway Partners.
The Towpath Trilogy Race Series consists of three events, the Towpath Half in April, the Towpath Ten-Ten in June and the Towpath Marathon in October. The Trilogy shows off different sections of the Towpath Trail at different times of the year. The Trilogy features a variety of race lengths to accommodate runners (and walkers) of all experience levels. Participants can “Conquer the Towpath Trilogy” by participating in all three events in a race season.
The Towpath Marathon was established in 1992 to introduce the Towpath Trail as a new recreational amenity and to promote the establishment of the Ohio & Erie Canalway; in 1993, it was one of ten events that celebrated the completion of the Towpath Trail through the Cuyahoga Valley National Park.
Since its inception the Towpath Marathon has grown to become one of Northeast Ohio’s premier marathons, attracting an average of 2,000 participants and 3,500 spectators from more than thirty-one states for a weekend of outdoor festivities and athletic competition.
According to Runner’s World, in their article “Bucket List: 10 Races In or Near National Parks.” The Towpath Marathon lets runners “Savor autumn in all its saturated hues at one of the most beautiful marathons on the fall racing calendar, which also happens to showcase one of the Midwest’s few national parks.” It is one of few marathons that take place in a National Park, and many consider it a unique specialty race due to the setting, fall foliage and crushed limestone surface. The course has changed many times throughout the life of the marathon and most recently draws attention to newly completed portions of the Towpath Trail as it heads into downtown Cleveland.
