About

Canalway Partners hosts the Towpath Marathon, Half Marathon and 10K every fall in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Described as “one of the most beautiful race courses in America” by Runner’s World magazine, the Towpath Marathon showcases breathtaking segments of the historic Towpath Trail located between Akron and Cleveland.

All proceeds from the event benefit Canalway Partners, an organization that has been actively developing and participating in a variety of events and projects to preserve, promote and educate the public about the National Heritage Area in Northeast, Ohio.  The NHA consists of many wonderful assets right here in Ohio, one of the most popular being the Towpath Trail.

The Towpath Marathon was established in 1992 to introduce the Towpath Trail as a new recreational amenity and to promote the establishment of the Ohio & Erie Canalway; in 1993, it was one of ten events that celebrated the completion of the Towpath Trail through the Cuyahoga Valley National Park.

Since its inception, the Towpath Marathon has grown to become one of Northeast Ohio’s premier marathons, attracting an average of 1,200 participants and 3,500 spectators from more than twenty-seven states for a weekend of outdoor festivities and athletic competition.

The Towpath Marathon is a Boston qualifier, and part of the Great Lakes Marathon Series.

Testimonials

Savor autumn in all its saturated hues at one of the most beautiful marathons on the fall racing calendar, which also happens to showcase one of the Midwest’s few national parks. Named for the Native American word for “crooked river,” the 33,000-acre Cuyahoga Valley National Park provides the brilliant backdrop for this trio of races, which started with a relay in 1992. The flat, fast events—including a marathon that’s popular as a Boston qualifier—feature a winding, scenic out-and-back on the park’s 85-mile Towpath Trail. The crushed limestone path meanders along the Cuyahoga River, complete with wooden bridges and resident wildlife like otters, herons, and even bald eagles. At the finish line, live music and $4 pints from a local brewery keep the fun rolling.” -Runner’s World- “Bucket List: 10 Races In or Near National Parks” -August 2015

Several races are justifiably well known for their spectacular scenery… With autumn colors at their peak, this was one of the most beautiful runs I’ve ever done. The entire valley was aflame with bright reds, oranges, golds, and yellows. – Dan Horvath, in Marathon & Beyond, July/August 2004 Issue

COURSE

Is the course flat?

YES. The course is VERY flat.

What is the surface?

The majority of the Towpath Marathon is run on the Towpath Trail which is comprised of a firmly packed, crushed limestone which is very easy on the joints.

The majority of the Towpath Half Marathon is also run on the Towpath Trail.

The 10K is a split of asphalt and Towpath Trail.

Is the course a Boston Marathon Qualifier?

Yes. The code is: OH 07043 PR

What are the course records?

Male – Coming Soon
Female – Coming Soon

Will any roads be closed?

Yes., each race is different please refer to the appropriate race page.  Generally, the roads close an hour before the start of each race.

Is every mile marked along the course?

Yes, we have several race divisions.  Please see below for your course markers:

The Towpath Marathon is marked with black and white signage and the Towpath Half Marathon is marked with yellow signs red letters.  The 10k is marked with blue signs and white letters.

How long is the course open?

The course will be supported with aid stations for 6 hours. We can not guarantee road closures or staffed aid stations past this time. This means that runners finishing the race in 6 hours will be running approximately a 13 minute mile. If you are concerned that you may not finish in that time frame, you may want to consider an early start. See question below.

Can I walk the course?

We welcome walkers and encourage them to take advantage of our 7:00 start time (full and half) to ensure that they finish within the allotted time.  We do not offer a Walker’s Division and find that runners tend to do a walk/run combo if they desire.

Walkers for the full and half will both start at 7:00am have a separate start line at mile one on the Towpath Trail just South of Boston Store.  Walkers can park at Boston Mills Ski Resort and there is less than a 1/4 mile walk to your start line.  Be careful as it will be dark walking to your start line and we recommend bringing water as your first early morning water stop may not be set up yet.
